Executive Director

Kara Kavka
Kara is a second generation homeschooler raising a family with her husband Adam in the vast countryside of Susquehanna county.
Despite over a decade in education, it wasn't until early 2019 that Kara was challenged with her beliefs on what true education is. It was answering this question that led her to seriously consider her philosophy of education and ultimately led to being a founding member of Thrive Academy. Kara has served in the board of directors at Thrive Academy since its start and currently fills the role of executive director. It is a great joy and privilege for Kara to serve the families of Thrive!

Presently, her husband, Mike, is the senior pastor at Evangelical Free Bible Church in Clarks Summit. One of Jen's greatest joys is serving alongside Mike. They long to see everyone, from children to adults, growing in their faith in Jesus! Colossians 1:28
When they are not serving together at church, she and her family love to just be together. Whether it is entertaining friends and family, tending the garden, listening to Adventures in Odyssey, sitting around the campfire, playing a game, or just watching a movie.
Teaching has always been one of Jen's passions, and she is really looking forward to returning to the classroom. She is excited to serve the families and students at Thrive Academy. She is looking forward to seeing how God will use her and the opportunities it presents to herself and her children.

Denae Young
Denae was born and raised just outside of Clarks Summit, PA where she still resides today with her husband, John, and two daughters. A hairstylist by trade, she’s owned her own salon for the past 17 years and most enjoys the relationships she has been able to build through meaningful conversations with her clients.
Growing up on a farm, she’s always had a natural love for nature and the “great outdoors” and desired to foster that same appreciation for God’s creation in her children. She was motivated to homeschool simply so that her and her husband could have more quality time with their children and have the freedom to educate how, when, and where they wanted, but little did they know that God had bigger, richer plans for their childrens’ education in the works! That same year she discovered Thrive Academy at its start in 2021 and was excited to find a program that encompassed a Christ-centered, gentle, learn-at-your-own-pace, nature-focused, rich education for homeschooled children and knew it was exactly where her children needed to be! This year she is honored to be able to step into the role of teaching and be a part of Thrive’s incredible educational mission!
In her free time you may find Denae hiking or biking local trails, studying natural health and fitness, planning their next family adventure whether it’s camping or overseas, or simply taking an early morning farm walk with her loyal pup, “Buttercup”. She loves Jesus, deep conversations, an occasional adrenaline rush and being present with the family God has richly blessed her with.

Christina Gillman
Christina lives in the beautiful hills of Northeast PA with her husband and three children. Although she and her husband both received a public-school education, they recognized the value and countless benefits of homeschooling and chose to homeschool their own children. It has been an incredible journey so far, and they are so grateful for all of the precious time they've had together to learn and grow as a family.
She has worked with children of all ages since she was a teenager, from the church nursery to the youth group. She also spent several years working in a daycare center. During that time, she completed her education to obtain an Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education.
In her free time, Christina enjoys spending quality time with friends, going on trips with her family (especially to the ocean), drinking coffee, playing the piano, and baking. She is passionate about relationships, and it is her desire to show others Christ's love by making them feel valued, seen, and heard.
She is so thankful that God opened doors and directed her path to Thrive Academy. Being part of it has been an invaluable experience for her family, and she is looking forward to the opportunity to bless the children that she has the privilege of teaching this year.
